Shifting from Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.

Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric

Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction process.

Questions Raised by Redactions

While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive black blocks raise significant questions about the information may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.

“People are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.

Some Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Release

However, some rightwing commentators and former President allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.

Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled certain conservative voices to go on the attack.

“It’s pretty ironic how the political left wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”

Clinton Campaign Issues Response

Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.

Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued

However, broader discourse on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law requiring the documents' release.

Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained no new data.
