Kristi Noem Visits Portland ICE Center With Right-Wing Figures

The South Dakota governor, acting as the DHS secretary, inspected the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland, Oregon on a recent weekday. While there, she observed a limited protest outside, which stands in stark contrast to the fiery "siege" alleged by Donald Trump.

Joined by MAGA Personalities

The secretary was escorted by a trio of right-wing figures who were driven from the Portland airport to the ICE office in her official convoy. DHS has recently produced more aggressive online posts featuring federal personnel carrying out immigration raids and deploying chemical irritants at crowds.

Gathering Outside

Local law enforcement established a perimeter outside the building in the city’s south waterfront neighborhood before the secretary’s visit. A handful individuals, among them one dressed as a chicken and another as a shark, were kept at a distance.

A song played loudly from a protest encampment nearby, with words mentioning Donald Trump and Epstein files. One protester shouted to a official camera operator filming from the top of the building, asking whether the DHS had been renamed the "information ministry".

Reporting Details

Reporters from nonpartisan publications were also restricted to the barrier outside, while the conservative personalities in her party—the conservative trio—broadcast online posts of the Noem participating in federal agents in prayer inside, offering a pep talk, and telling a individual of the Oregon National Guard to "Get ready".

Recent Rulings

The secretary has previously echoed the Trump's assertions that the small band of demonstrators—who have rallied in their limited groups outside the site since June, including one in an frog outfit—are "extremists" who have placed the facility "besieged", making the sending of DHS agents essential.

Yet, on last weekend, a federal judge in Portland halted his effort to bring under federal control local militia, stating that the his assertions that the largely peaceful city was "burning to the ground" were "untethered to the facts".

Following that, the judge, Judge Immergut—who was nominated to the judiciary by Trump—extended the decision to prevent guard members from elsewhere from being sent in Portland. She acted after the former president answered to her previous decision by trying to send members of the California's guard to Portland.

Escalating Tensions

Since Donald Trump focused on the modest but continuous demonstration outside the office and made unsubstantiated allegations that Oregon is "war ravaged", a growing number of his supporters, including MAGA influencers, have appeared to challenge the demonstrators.

Several of these encounters have caused fights and fistfights, leading to arrests by the officers. Nick Sortor was among those arrested after he attempted to push through a protest encampment on a pavement near the office and was engaged in a fight over an U.S. flag. He had before taken the flag from a protester who was burning it.

Legal accusations against the influencer were eventually dismissed after an protest in right-wing outlets prompted the chief of the legal unit of the DOJ, Harmeet Dhillon, to threaten an investigation of the local police over supposed political bias.

Two individuals the influencer was arrested for fighting with still face charges.

Authorities' Comments

On Sunday, Governor Tina Kotek, she, claimed DHS agents in the site of trying to irritate the crowds by using disproportionate amounts of chemical irritants in a local community and including conservative social media influencers to document the gathering from the roof of the site. "They are clearly trying to antagonize the crowds," she commented.

Three of those MAGA-aligned figures were mentioned in a official record last month as "counter-protesters" who "constantly return and antagonize the protesters until they are attacked or exposed to irritants" and resist "ongoing instructions from police to keep clear of" the protesters.

Online Content

A conservative personality, a ex-reporter who transitioned as a right-wing commentator after being dismissed from a media outlet for content theft, posted video of Governor Noem observing from the upper level of the office at the small group of protesters below, including Jack Dickinson who wears a fowl suit to mock Trump. The influencer described the footage of her inspecting the calm environment below: "Governor Noem faces off against radicals and a chicken-clad individual".

In spite of the disconnect between the claims from Trump and Noem that this site is "besieged" from "radicals" and visible proof of a handful of demonstrators in peaceful clothing, the personalities with her continued to label the group as threatening extremists.

Official Engagement

During her visit, Governor Noem also engaged with the law enforcement head, Chief Day, who has been caricatured as "woke" in right-wing outlets for authorizing his personnel to apprehend Sortor. In a social media update on the discussion, the influencer claimed that the chief had "aligned with violent ANTIFA militants attacking journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

Her security detail then drove out the site past a small group of protesters on the exterior, including one wearing a animal wearing a headgear.
