Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Chief James Comey Files Not Guilty Plea to Accusations of Lying US Legislators

Previous FBI director James the former director has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to US legislators and impeding a congressional proceeding.

The former director's legal representative entered the response representing him in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would attempt to have the case dismissed for multiple causes including that his defendant, a critic of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

The former director was indicted just days after the former president urged his attorney general to move forward against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald advised the judge they intended to submit several petitions to terminate the proceedings before a legal hearing, claiming the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was improperly designated to assume control of the proceedings.

James Comey's legal matter was originally handled by Erik Siebert, who resigned under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his examination into an additional opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

James Comey came across in positive mood as he walked into the court on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and making jokes. He was supported by his partner, Patrice Failor and daughter his daughter, a government attorney who the Trump administration dismissed.

Upon hearing to the magistrate read his rights and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on mid-week, the defendant was questioned if he comprehended the accusations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the proceedings.

Previous Events

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was fired about four months into Trump's first administration as national leader. At the moment, Mr Comey was directing an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

While in office, the director sparked a counter-response from liberal politicians when he stated just shortly prior to the national vote that he was investigating political contender Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Clinton were never brought, causing negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys allege James Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he provided false information to the upper house by claiming he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to leak to media organizations data about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also allege Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, obstruct and delay" the panel by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media the former director published to his social media after he was indicted, he stated he was wrongly accused and charged the former president of acting like a "autocrat".

"We have known for years that there are costs to standing up to Mr Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "So let's have a court case."

The charges against the former director emerged after Donald Trump shared on social media insisting on his top legal official, Ms Bondi, charge James Comey and additional individuals.
