Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Responds to Trump's Threat to Relocate World Cup Matches from Boston
Boston's mayor, Michelle Wu, suggested that the municipality was prepared for a face-off with US President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could instruct FIFA to relocate World Cup matches from Gillette Stadium, located approximately 35 kilometers south-west of Boston.
Wu appeared on a Boston-based podcast recently to address criticism from the White House, which had described her as "radical left." President Trump had warned that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "clean up its act."
A great deal of it is locked down by agreement so that no one, even if they live in the White House, can undo it.
She continued, "We live in a time where for attention, for control, to test limits ... repeated warnings ... are issued at people and cities who refuse to back down and submit or be obedient to a hateful agenda."
Mayor Wu also remarked, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging Boston's values." Wu finished by emphasizing her support for the city, saying, "Fully committed for Boston."
Trump's Statements and FIFA's Role
Earlier this week, Infantino was photographed with President Trump at the international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. Infantino has also visited the Oval Office and given World Cup tournament and club championship trophies to the president as presents.
On Tuesday, President Trump was questioned on unrest in South Boston that involved a police car being set on fire. Trump replied, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Gianni – the head of FIFA, who's great."
He continued, "I'd tell him: 'We should relocate the games' and they would do that. He might not prefer it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also specifically targeted Mayor Wu, saying, "Boston's mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"
Previous Threats and Upcoming Tournament Details
President Trump has previously suggested that he would take the similar discussion with Infantino about moving games from other host cities, which are among the 16 host cities across North America.
The US is joint hosts the 2026 World Cup with neighboring countries. The expanded tournament is planned to be played from June 11 to 19 July in the coming year.
